Teaching ELLs- Keys for SIOP Model Instruction

The SIOP Model is a systematic way of providing English language learners (ELLs) the necessary instruction in order to be successful in school. SIOP stands for "Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol." The creators of the SIOP Model recognized the need for an effective model on how to teach English language learners when there was a large influx of ELLs entering public schools and a lack of teachers who knew how to properly instruct them.

The SIOP Model, when implemented effectively, provides ELLs with an opportunity to develop English language proficiency and content knowledge at the same time (Echevarria & Vogt, 2004, p. 2). There are 8 key components to the SIOP Model:
  1. Preparation: Teachers plan lessons carefully. They keep in mind the various language objectives as well as any adaptations that will be necessary.
  2. Building Background: The teacher provides connections of new ideas to the students' background knowledge and past learning experiences.
  3. Comprehensible Input: A variety of teaching techniques are implemented in order to provide the student with a clearer understanding. For example, use of visuals, hands-on activities, and clear directions.
  4. Strategies: The teachers helps the student build a repertoire of strategies that will be beneficial to them when learning new material.
  5. Interaction: The student is given several opportunities to interact with his/her peers, as well as opportunities to participate in class discussions.
  6. Practice and Application: The teacher provides the student with manipulatives to help solidify new concepts. The student is also given various opportunities to apply their new language and content knowledge.
  7. Lesson Delivery: When delivering a lesson, the teacher speaks clearly and at an appropriate speed. The teacher is should also teach lessons that provide clear support for content and language objectives.
  8. Review and Assessment: The teacher provides frequent feedback to the student. Continuous assessment is also important.

The reason the SIOP Model is so successful in teaching ELLs is because it focuses on teaching ELLs English as well as content. It is inefficient to wait until the English language is mastered before teaching content. The SIOP Model is proven to be most successful when it's teaching practices are used in combination on a daily basis.
